Why My Speed is Slow?

Your speed will likely be slower than the service you ordered. This is normal. With any broadband service, there is overhead - part of your speed is used by packet headers that tell the network where your communication is coming from and destined for.

If your speed tests are lower than the 10-20% mark, it could be:

  • you are testing the speedtest while downloading a file/e-mail
  • someone else at your location is using the internet while you are testing
  • you have spyware or viruses that are being sent over that connection
  • your virus/child protection software is hindering traffic
  • you have a cabling issue at your location (Ethernet, DSL line)
  • the wireless tower is congested (if you are on wireless)

If you connection is consistently lower, it could be:

  • a DSL line issue (if you are on DSL)
  • an issue at Visionary
  • a router/firewall failure
  • your virus/child protection software is hindering traffic
  • you have a cabling issue at your location (Ethernet, DSL line)

If your speed is consistently low. Keep in mind that with overhead:

  • a 256k connection will run between 204k and 212k
  • a 1500k connection will run between 1325k and 1440k

Why are your speeds different here compared to other speed tests? Speed tests are run by sending files from a server to you, and back to the server.
Therefore, the speed test depends on the:

  • type of file
  • server efficiency
  • server load
  • internet congestion between you and server

Each speed test is programmed a little different. Also, because some ISPs shape traffic, a speed test that transfers an MP3 may run slower than a speed test that transfers a JPG file.
